A total conversion is a modification that almost replaces or modifies every aspect of the existing game content. The edge between standart modifications and total conversions is not clearly defined. Typical parts of such kind of modification are for example the huge amount of modified files or the wide range of changed aspects of the game giving the player a completely new game atmosphere. Those aspects are often:

  • A completely new map replacing the default game world. There are also total conversions which add new elements to the world or change them in a way to make them look drastically different.
  • A modified or new mission script containing new missions or other scripted aspects
  • A different player model or new pedestrians.
  • New ambient sounds and/or radio stations.

Usually a modification changes at least two of those aspects to be categorized as a total conversion.
